Another Book Launch at Berardo’s
Hot on the heels of Gary Mehigan and his book launch at the elegant all-white berardo’s restaurant in Noosa, came Nikki Parkinson with her book Unlock Your Style.
Nikki is a fashion blogger like no other, a success story that inspires and motivates – and in my case, has me green to the gills with jealousy and saying “why can’t I be like that?”
Nikki began blogging six years ago about fashion and beauty and she has an easy writing style. She gives her readers oodles of helpful (and useful information) and she now has thousands (literally) of fans all over the country who tune into her blog – Styling You – every day to receive fashion advice, information about the latest labels and state-of-the-art beauty products…and a whole lot more, including lots of fun stuff. She has really good giveaways too and competitions so her blog is very interactive.
I met Nikki 20 years ago. She was a journalist at the Sunshine Coast Daily when I first started there so it was a delight for me to meet her at berardo’s and to do a Q&A with her over a sublime lunch.
Jim Berardo, owner of berardo’s, does these book launch lunches so well. His chef – Tim Montgomery – and the kitchen team present food so pretty you almost feel guilty putting your knife and fork into it and spoiling the presentation. (But only guilty for a minute in my case before I dive in for the attack.)
As Nikki signed books, out came an entrée of house made labna (a sort of cheese) with spiced granola and rye and paper thin (almost transparent) shavings of radish. What a sensation with the creamy labna, the sweet spice of granola and the picturesque appeal of the radish.
Then, moist, succulent and fresh barramundi with petit pois a la Francaise – a delightful and fancy way the French do peas, with wilted lettuce and lardons or small pieces of crispy bacon.
A dessert of rosewater panacotta, strawberries with mint and watermelon…and was that Persian fairy floss on top?- finished off the delightful lunch.
Fab Fashion Advice
My Man Geoffrey came with me to the lunch even though it was decidedly girly, but he is often my photographer and his presence was required behind the camera to make Nikki and I look extra fabulous.
Nikki, looking very glam in a black Sacha Drake dress showed us how to make the dress (a classic) look completely different just by making a few easy changes: adding a scarf (totally different look with the pop of colour) and then putting on a floating long blouse (took the classic black look in another direction), and then showing us how to bling it up with a super sexy light-as-air jacket with sparkly lapels.
One priceless bit of fashion advice Nikki gave us, and we’d all be well-advised to take it: make sure you have good underwear, especially a properly fitted bra!
If you have not been fitted for a bra, do it, right now – don’t be shy, a professional will get your girls into the right sized and shaped bra no matter how small or large your girls may be, and you’d be surprised the difference it makes to an outfit. (Nikki did reveal that until she was fitted with a bra she had no idea her boobs went sideways.) (Who could know?) (And how to correct such a weird but common thing?) (With the right bra of course.)
The Noosa ladies were all dressed beautifully – how about these two beautiful fashionistas? I love everything about their elegant look from their stylish hair to their beautiful outfits.
One more priceless gem of fashion advice came from Nikki: how to make yourself look your gorgeous and youthful by posing the right way in front of the camera. Hand on hip, slightly turn the body and – if you can – cross one leg in front of the other and then slightly face the camera. Takes kilos and years off you.
Let’s have a glass of bubbly to that.
Unlock Your Style is in all good bookshops.
